The Development Director is Star Island Corporation's (SIC's) fundraising coordinator and manages all aspects of fund development in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer. The Development Director designs, implements and manages all fundraising activities including annual giving, endowment and capital campaigns, and serves as the senior advisor on development for the Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors and its committees. This position reports to the CEO of the Star Island Corporation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides leadership for the Star Island Corporation development effort.

  • Develops goals and strategies for all fundraising campaigns in conjunction with Development Committee.
  • Serves as the senior advisor on development for the Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors and its committees.
  • Utilizes the SIC’s strategic plan and business model to initiate, coordinate, and evaluate fundraising activities.

Creates a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization.

  • Coordinate an ambitious Annual Fund campaign that grows each year and reports results regularly to the community.
  • Directs capital campaign efforts with fundraising consultant to accomplish prospect identification, solicitation, and stewardship activities to individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Researches, writes and obtains grants.
  • Replenishes and grows the Star Island Permanent Trust by seeking bequests, planned gifts and other gifts to the McGill Society.

Coordinates the daily activities of Star Island Corporation development programs.

  • Meets with donors and prospective donors to create and foster relationships.
  • Works with Development Associate in the formulation of a comprehensive communication plan, initiates effective communication strategies, and monitors activities including publications, flyers, speeches, visual or audio presentations, websites, interviews, and community outreach.
  • Develops and implements procedures, and supervises research and maintenance of giving records and donor profiles with Development Associate.
  • Recruits and directs volunteers for fund-raising tasks and programs and ensures that volunteers receive fund-raising educational counsel when needed.
  • Trains and supervises any new staff members that may be hired to support development efforts.

Works with others on special events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in designing and managing development programs, including a successful capital campaign.
  • A Bachelors Degree
  • Experience with developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members, donors, administrators and staff.
  • The ability to take initiative while remaining open to ideas of others
  • The ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Familiarity with New England Region
