Working: Seasonal: Pelican Job Description
Seasonal | Volunteering | Year Round
Interested in joining the 2008 Pelican community? Applications are still available.
Star Island Corporation hires nearly 100 seasonal positions each year—people who hold these positions are called "Pelicans." We are now accepting applications for regular season and end-of-season Pelicans. Applications for regular season that are postmarked or electronically submitted after January 13 will be considered on an as needed basis. End-of-season applications are considered throughout the year on an as need basis; there is no application deadline per se. Applications are available in downloadable PDF format or as an online form.
A document listing general information for applicants, including expanded job descriptions, is also available for download.
We offer seasonal positions from April 2 to November 2, though the majority of our employees work during the regular conference season, which runs from June 8 to September 15. Although there is some flexibility in hiring to accommodate the opening of schools and colleges in the fall, preference is given to those who can work the full conference season through mid-September.
If you are a first-year applicant, in addition to your application, we require two reference forms to be filled out. Without these forms, your application will be considered incomplete. Reference forms may be filled out by an employer/supervisor, professor, advisor or school guidance counselor, principal, teacher, minister or religious education director, etc. References from family members or peers will not be considered.
Working on Star Island can be extremely rewarding. Indeed, many lives have been positively influenced, and even careers determined, by spending a summer working on Star Island. But being a Pelican is more than just getting a job on Star Island for the summer—it is about joining a community of interesting, talented, and hard working individuals. We seek staff members who will commit to doing a good job, whether that job involves providing direct services to conferees (such as making beds, cooking food, or working at the front desk) or serving on our support crews (such as repairing trucks, painting buildings, or running our generators). The powerful Pelican community that arises each summer is an outgrowth of common goals, hard work, and mutual support. Over the past few years, the number of applicants has greatly exceeded the number of positions we have available and thus, the selection process has become very competitive.
A Pelican on Star Island is both a worker and a member of the island community. We share a small island with people who come for rest and relaxation. Our job is to make a good week on Star possible for well over 3,000 conferees each season. Furthermore, our job is to keep people safe during their visits to the island. Responsible behavior on and off the job is, therefore, essential. Our staff members also serve as firefighters and evacuators; the ability to respond at any time, day or night, to an emergency situation must be foremost in everyone's mind. Therefore, we have very high expectations regarding responsible behavior, particularly regarding the consumption of alcohol. If you are hired, you will be expected to complete the required number of nights on fire watch and participate in weekly clean up of Pelican living areas.
Seeking a job on Star means you are willing to commit to working hard and to contributing to the Pelican community and experience. In return, you will be presented with a unique opportunity and one that could be of lifetime importance to you.
